In a fresh cybersecurity alert, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has warned users of the Tron blockchain about a new phishing scheme involving fake tokens designed to appear as official communication.
The scam involves sending “FBI-branded” tokens directly to crypto wallets. These tokens carry messages claiming the user’s account is under investigation. Victims are then pressured to complete a fake verification process to avoid having their assets locked. Authorities say the goal is to steal sensitive personal data and potentially gain access to funds.
According to details shared by the FBI’s New York division, the attack often uses TRC-20 tokens that are placed into user wallets without consent. These tokens include urgent messages warning of security issues and possible fund freezes. Users are then redirected to fraudulent websites where they are asked to share wallet credentials, identification details, and other sensitive information.
Scammers may also use “address poisoning,” a tactic that tricks users into sending funds to fraudulent wallet addresses controlled by attackers.
The FBI has advised users to “exercise caution” and avoid interacting with such tokens. It also warned users not to provide “any identifying information to any website associated with such token.” The agency clarified that it does not issue tokens or request verification through such methods.
Victims have been urged to report incidents to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Officials highlighted that these scams rely on fear and urgency to manipulate users into taking quick actions.
The warning comes as crypto-related fraud continues to rise globally. In India, authorities recently took action in the GainBitcoin fraud case, exposing large-scale crypto investment scams that targeted users with misleading claims.
The alert highlights the increasing sophistication of scams in blockchain ecosystems. While decentralised platforms offer advantages, users are advised to stay alert, verify sources, and avoid sharing sensitive information on untrusted platforms.
