FBI warns of Iranian hackers using Telegram to target critics worldwide

Raising concerns over rising cyber threats, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has alerted users about Iranian government hackers exploiting Telegram to carry out targeted cyber attacks.

According to the warning, these attacks are aimed at dissidents, opposition groups, and journalists critical of the regime across the world. In the first stage, hackers impersonate trusted contacts or tech support teams. They trick victims into clicking on links that install malicious files, often disguised as legitimate apps like Telegram and WhatsApp.

Once the malware is installed, the attack enters its second stage. The infected system connects to Telegram bots, allowing hackers to gain remote access and control over the victim’s device. This technique helps attackers hide harmful activity within normal network traffic, making it harder for cybersecurity systems to detect and block the intrusion.

The FBI has linked these operations to hackers associated with Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS). The agency stated that these cyber attacks are part of a broader effort to advance the regime’s “geopolitical agenda.” The alert also referenced Handala, a pro-Iranian and pro-Palestine hacktivist group, though its direct involvement in these specific attacks remains unclear.

Earlier this month, Handala claimed responsibility for a cyber attack on Stryker. The incident led to the wiping of tens of thousands of employee devices. In an 8-K filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the company confirmed it is still in the process of recovering from the breach.

Last week, the US Justice Department alleged that Handala operates as a front for Iran’s government and MOIS, and was behind the attack on Stryker.
