As anticipation builds around the 8th Pay Commission, cyber fraudsters have launched a new scam targeting central government employees and pensioners through fake “salary calculator” apps.
Cyber security agencies have warned that scammers are sharing malicious links via platforms like WhatsApp, urging users to download APK files that appear legitimate.
According to investigations, these messages claim users can check their revised salary after the 8th Pay Commission by downloading an app. However, once installed, the APK file can compromise the user’s mobile device.
The app is not a real calculator but malware that gives fraudsters full access to the phone, including messages, banking details, OTPs and other sensitive data.
Cyber agencies said the scam is spreading rapidly on WhatsApp. Messages are designed in an official tone to gain trust and appear authentic.
They often include phrases like “download now” or “limited-time opportunity” to create urgency and push users to click without verifying.
After installation, scammers can remotely control the device. They can access banking apps, SMS and emails to capture OTPs and carry out unauthorized transactions without the user’s knowledge.
Experts note that victims often remain unaware while such activities take place.
“Cyber criminals are increasingly using social engineering techniques to exploit people’s curiosity and needs. Targeting a sensitive topic like the 8th Pay Commission is a clear example of this,” said Triveni Singh.
Authorities have advised users not to download unknown links or APK files. Official apps are only available on trusted platforms like the Google Play Store or official websites.
Users should always verify messages before trusting them. Banks and government institutions never ask for OTPs, PINs or passwords. Avoid clicking on links from unknown numbers and report suspicious activity immediately. Experts warn that such frauds are rising with increased digital usage. Scammers are using topics like government schemes, pay commissions and banking updates to trap users.
Staying alert and relying only on official sources is essential, as even a small mistake can put personal data and money at serious risk.
