The Central Crime Branch has arrested a 37-year-old software engineer for allegedly defrauding victims of cybercrime by posing as a legal aid provider and charging service fees without offering any assistance.
The arrest was made after a victim who lost ₹1.5 crore in a cyber fraud case in Ramamurthynagar filed a complaint. While searching online for help, the victim was contacted by the accused, who claimed to represent a firm named Quickmoto Legal Service, and managed to extract ₹12.5 lakh in February under the guise of legal fees.
During the investigation, police found that Quickmoto Legal Service was non-existent, with no physical office. The accused was later tracked to another fake setup named India Legal Service, operating out of Kasturinagar. The officials confirmed that the entire operation was a sham.
The arrested individual has been identified as Thufail Ahmed C.A.M., a native of Kadalur in Tamil Nadu. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering.
Thufail had established a tele-calling centre in Kasturinagar, employing 12 people whose task was to identify and contact cybercrime victims. Using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls to avoid detection, the team reached out to victims under the pretext of offering legal help.
According to the police, Thufail, along with his brother based in Dubai, set up multiple fake companies to run this elaborate scam.
Preliminary findings revealed that at least 29 people have been duped so far. Thufail has been booked under the Information Technology Act and is currently in police custody as officials probe deeper into his background and possible wider network.
