Fake Inscriptions Found on Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds Sent to GIA

Four diamonds submitted to the Dubai lab of the Gemological Institute of America for updated services were discovered to have counterfeit inscriptions. The stones included both natural and synthetic diamonds.

The GIA reported that an initial inspection revealed inconsistencies in font style and the placement of the inscriptions, confirming that the diamonds were not authentic. The stones had been carefully selected to match the details on their original reports. However, subtle differences in color grades, measurements, and other characteristics were identified. Notably, all original diamonds were type Ia, while the submitted stones were type IIa.

The first two fake diamonds were natural stones that had undergone High Pressure-High Temperature treatment to enhance their color. For example, one original diamond was 1.07 carats, E color, and VVS1 clarity with cloud, pinpoint, and feather inclusions. Its counterfeit counterpart was 1.07 carats, E color, VS1 clarity, containing feather inclusions and internal graining.

The third diamond was lab-grown using chemical vapor deposition and had also undergone post-growth HPHT processing. It was submitted with the inscription number of a natural diamond. The fourth stone was another lab-grown diamond posing as a natural one.

“Considering all evidence, we concluded that two of the four stones were laboratory-grown diamonds, and the other two were HPHT-processed natural diamonds,” the GIA stated. “All four diamonds were not the same natural diamonds as described in their accompanying GIA grading reports. In accordance with GIA procedures, the counterfeit inscriptions were crossed out and new report numbers were assigned. These cases highlight the importance of verifying inscription authenticity because a fraudulent inscription could be overlooked by simple visual examination.”

This incident underscores the need for careful verification in the diamond trade, as even diamonds appearing genuine can carry misleading inscriptions.
