Concerns around cyber exposure are rising as artificial intelligence becomes deeply embedded in business operations, and a new survey shows senior leaders do not always agree on what that means for security and growth.
The survey conducted by corporate insurer Axis Capital gathered views from 250 CEOs and Chief Information Security Officers in the US and UK on how AI is reshaping cyber risk. While many CEOs see AI as a driver of efficiency and competitive advantage, cyber leaders tend to focus more on the downside. CISOs are more likely to believe AI increases threats such as data leaks and system misuse. “When you think about AI, it is not merely a cyber challenge. This technology presents unique burdens, liabilities, challenges and opportunities to CEOs and boards alike,” Axis CEO Vincent Tizzio said in an interview with a business news outlet.
Confidence in AI as a cyber defense tool also varies by role. The survey found that 19.5% of CEOs said they were not confident that AI would strengthen protection, compared with 30% of CISOs who said they lacked confidence. According to Tizzio, “The rapidity of change that’s going on in AI renders reconsideration of the purchases that they’re making and taking around the tools that they’re bringing to the company.” This pace of change is pushing organizations to reassess how AI driven tools are selected and deployed.
Regional differences further shape cyber readiness. While 85% of executives in the US said they felt prepared to handle AI related cyber threats, only 44% of leaders in the UK shared that view. Despite these concerns, investment in digital defense remains a top priority. Ransomware attacks have nearly doubled over the past 2 years, and 82% of respondents said they plan to raise security budgets over the next 12 months, highlighting the growing importance of resilience to business well being.
