Indian origin former Tesla executive Ganesh Venkataramanan has founded DensityAI, an artificial intelligence startup focused on developing chips, hardware, and software for data centres serving automotive, robotics, and AI applications. The company, currently preparing to emerge from stealth mode, is in talks to raise hundreds of millions of dollars in funding, according to a report.
DensityAI’s co-founders include former Tesla engineers Bill Chang and Ben Floering, along with around 20 ex-members of Tesla’s Dojo team, including senior staff. The startup has also attracted talent from various parts of the technology industry. Former Tesla investor relations chief Martin Viecha has joined as an adviser.
The company’s aim is to create advanced AI infrastructure for data centres, offering automakers a plug and play solution for the high computing demands of self-driving systems. This includes tasks such as sensor fusion, simulation, and edge computing.
Ganesh Venkataramanan earned a BE in Electronics from the University of Mumbai in 1995. He began his career at Hexaware Technologies before pursuing further studies at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. In 1998, he joined Analog Devices, working on advanced computer chip design.
In the early 2000s, he moved to AMD, where he spent nearly 15 years leading processor development and managing a team of over 200 engineers. In 2016, he joined Tesla as Director of Autopilot Hardware, building the Silicon team from the ground up and launching the industry’s first Full Self Driving chip and computer. By 2018, he was Senior Director of Autopilot Hardware, overseeing the concept to production of Tesla’s Dojo supercomputers for AI training and data centre infrastructure.
Currently based in Santa Clara, California, Mr Venkataramanan’s work on Tesla’s Dojo project involved creating custom chips and servers to train neural networks for self-driving and robotics. News of DensityAI’s launch came as Tesla shares closed flat in postmarket trading.
