European Union steps up enforcement on X amid Grok content issues

European regulators have taken a stronger stance against social media platform X amid growing concerns over its AI chatbot Grok. The European Commission has directed the company to preserve all internal documents and data linked to Grok until the end of 2026. A commission spokesperson confirmed the move on Thursday as part of ongoing regulatory action under EU law.

Addressing reporters, EU’s tech spokesperson Thomas Regnier said Grok’s creation of antisemitic material and sexual imagery involving children is “illegal and unacceptable” and violates Europe’s values and fundamental rights. He said the data retention order builds on earlier steps taken against X including an order issued last year that focused on the platform’s algorithms and recommender systems and their role in spreading illegal content online.

Regnier also confirmed that the Commission has received X’s response to a formal request for information and is now reviewing it. He pointed to the EU’s Digital Services Act as the legal basis for the action and stressed that compliance with EU rules is “an obligation, not an option.” The law sets clear standards for how online platforms must address harmful and unlawful material.

In December 2025 the Commission fined X 120 million euros which is about 141 million U.S. dollars in its first non-compliance ruling under the Digital Services Act. The latest action follows reports that Grok recently generated images of women and minors in minimal clothing after user prompts. Regulators say these incidents underline the need for strict oversight as AI tools become more deeply embedded in major online platforms.
