European telecom operators likely to secure majority of key 6 GHz spectrum

A major decision on the future use of the upper 6 GHz band in Europe is moving closer, with indications that mobile operators will receive most of the spectrum they have been demanding. People familiar with the discussions said that an advisory body to the European Commission is preparing to support this allocation.

Telecom companies such as Deutsche Telekom, Orange, TIM and Vodafone have been pushing for more spectrum to support mobile networks. They argue that Europe risks falling behind the United States in future 6G rollout if operators do not gain access to this important mid band spectrum. The upper 6 GHz range is one of the last large blocks still available for mobile expansion.

On the other side, major technology companies including Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms and Microsoft want the same band for Wi Fi services and for the next wave of digital products. Both sides have been seeking exclusive rights to the entire band, making this one of the most contested spectrum debates in the region.

Sources said the Radio Spectrum Policy Group, which met in Brussels earlier in the day, is expected to recommend that five hundred forty megahertz of the band be allocated to mobile operators. The remaining one hundred sixty megahertz would be kept reserved for the Wi Fi industry until the World Radiocommunication Conference in 2027. That conference, led by the International Telecommunication Union, will outline a longer term plan for future mobile technologies and spectrum use.

The group’s opinion will next be shared with the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations. This body, which includes forty six member countries, will set the technical rules for how operators can use the assigned spectrum. Experts believe commercial 6G services will begin in the next decade.

Several countries including the United States, Canada and South Korea have already opened parts of the 6 GHz band for Wi Fi use. The European decision is expected to shape the region’s competitive position in next generation wireless technology.
