EU Launches New Strategic Roadmap to Strengthen Ties With India

The European Union has unveiled a new strategic roadmap aimed at deepening its partnership with India, focusing on trade, technology, defence, and climate cooperation. The announcement in Brussels highlights Europe’s plan to expand engagement with New Delhi at a time of shifting global power dynamics.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, while presenting the roadmap, said the timing was critical to enhance cooperation. “Now is the time to double down on partnerships rooted in shared interests and guided by common values. With our new EU-India strategy, we are taking our relationship to the next level,” she stated.

The plan, jointly adopted by the European Commission and EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, identifies areas of collaboration such as digital innovation, security, connectivity, and green energy. It reflects Europe’s recognition of India as a vital partner in ensuring global stability and advancing sustainable growth.

However, EU officials noted challenges that could affect progress. A senior European diplomat pointed out that India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian oil has caused friction, given the EU’s strong stance on isolating Moscow over the Ukraine conflict. Brussels stressed that dialogue will remain the main approach to managing such differences.

Trade is expected to be a central pillar of the roadmap, with both sides seeking to revive talks on the stalled India-EU Free Trade Agreement. The agreement, if finalised, could generate significant opportunities in jobs, innovation, and investment.

Defence ties also form a major part of the strategy, with Europe looking to India as a key partner in safeguarding maritime security in the Indo-Pacific. The roadmap highlights closer work on counterterrorism, cyber resilience, and strengthening supply chains. On climate change, the EU and India will focus on green technologies, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure, with Brussels identifying India’s large energy market as crucial to achieving global net zero targets.

While trade negotiations and energy policy remain areas of concern, the roadmap is seen as one of the most ambitious frameworks for India-EU relations. Its effective implementation could open a new chapter in the partnership, balancing geopolitical challenges with shared opportunities for growth and cooperation.
