In a move to strengthen its presence in human spaceflight, the European Space Agency has announced plans to send astronauts to the International Space Station using a SpaceX Crew Dragon.
The announcement was made by ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher on March 19, 2026. The mission is part of ESA’s new EPIC project, which aims to increase opportunities for European astronauts to travel to space before the ISS is retired.
Scheduled for early 2028, the EPIC mission will send 4 professional astronauts, including members from ESA and international partners, for a 1-month stay aboard the International Space Station. The mission will focus on scientific research and station maintenance rather than short-duration visits.
ESA will lead the mission, with support from NASA.
The development comes as the ISS approaches the later stage of its lifecycle. The space station is expected to retire by 2030, though there is a possibility it could continue operations until 2032.
The EPIC mission is seen as a key step in ensuring Europe remains actively involved in human space exploration. It also aligns with the global transition toward future commercial space stations.
