Ericsson Expands Footprint with New R&D Unit in Bengaluru, to Add 150 Positions

Swedish telecom giant Ericsson has announced the launch of a dedicated Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) development unit in Bengaluru. This move significantly expands its R&D presence in India and is expected to create more than 150 new positions.

The new unit is part of it’s broader strategy to advance its Ericsson Silicon platform, central to building high-performing, energy-efficient System on a Chip (SoC) solutions for modern mobile networks, including 5G.

Nitin Bansal, Managing Director, Ericsson India, said: “Expanding ASIC R&D in India will allow us to leverage local technology competence and enhance our capabilities in semiconductor design. This unit will also contribute towards strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem in the country.”

Strengthening India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem

Ericsson’s Bengaluru ASIC unit will focus on designing advanced semiconductors for telecom infrastructure, helping:
  • Strengthen India’s emerging semiconductor design ecosystem
  • Foster local talent development in chip design and R&D
  • Support India’s vision for self-reliant technology development

Focus on Ericsson Silicon Platform

The new Bengaluru unit aligns with it’s global strategy to enhance its Ericsson Silicon platform, which powers the Ericsson Radio System. Ericsson Silicon delivers:
  • Energy-efficient, high-performance System on a Chip (SoC)
  • Optimised solutions for mobile networks, including 5G
  • Future-ready technology addressing evolving telecom needs
By investing in local R&D, Ericsson ensures its solutions are well-adapted to regional requirements while driving innovation and efficiency globally.
Expanding Ericsson’s India R&D Presence
Ericsson already operates R&D centres in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Gurugram, with teams working across critical telecom domains:
  • Transport
  • Packet Core
  • Operations Support Systems (OSS)
  • Business Support Systems (BSS)
  • Cloud technologies
  • Advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions
The new ASIC unit will strengthen it’s India R&D footprint , making the country a strategic hub for developing next-generation telecom technologies.
Why This Matters
It’s investment in India’s semiconductor design capabilities comes at a critical time:
  • India is prioritising semiconductor manufacturing and design as part of its economic strategy.
  • Global 5G rollout requires cutting-edge, efficient hardware.
  • Local R&D expansion creates high-value engineering jobs and knowledge transfer.
This initiative reinforces India’s position as a key global destination for telecom innovation and semiconductor R&D.

Conclusion

Ericsson’s new Bengaluru ASIC development unit underscores its long-term commitment to India’s technology landscape. By creating over 150 new positions and investing in local semiconductor design, Ericsson is not only advancing its own portfolio but also contributing to India’s goal of building a resilient, innovation-driven semiconductor ecosystem.
