In a move that strengthens India’s growing digital ecosystem, Equinix has announced the launch of its fourth International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Mumbai, named MB3.

Located in Chandivali, Powai, MB3 is the third Equinix facility in Central Mumbai and forms part of an interconnected campus linked through dark fibre networks. The company has invested over $95 million in the project, which currently offers more than 1,370 cabinets and is designed to scale up to over 5,475 cabinets in the future.

Cyrus Adaggra, President Asia Pacific at Equinix, said that Mumbai and India remain key strategic markets. He noted that the company has already invested $365 million in India and expects further investments going forward.

Equinix is focusing on demand from sectors such as BFSI, submarine cable operators and gaming companies, instead of hyperscalers. Across its Mumbai and Chennai campuses, the company currently offers a combined capacity of more than 4,725 cabinets. Its Mumbai operations support a cloud ecosystem that includes players like Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud and Salesforce.

Devendra Fadnavis said that with Maharashtra hosting nearly 60% of India’s data centre capacity, the addition of the AI-ready MB3 facility, along with Equinix’s solar plant in Yavatmal, strengthens Mumbai’s position as a leading digital hub.

MB3 operates with 100% renewable energy coverage. The company has also commissioned a 26.4 MWp group captive solar project in partnership with CleanMax. The project is expected to generate around 41.4 million kWh of clean energy annually and reduce over 30,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

Manoj Paul, Managing Director, India, Equinix, said that the Union Budget 2026 proposals, including tax benefits for global cloud providers and safe harbor provisions, are expected to boost India’s position as a global digital hub.

Globally, Equinix operates 280 data centres across 77 markets in 36 countries, serving over 10,500 businesses.
