EPAM sees India’s GCCs emerging as early adopters of AI

Global capability centres (GCCs) in India are rapidly embracing artificial intelligence, matching the pace of adoption seen in developed economies, according to EPAM Systems CEO and President Balazs Fejes.

Fejes noted that GCCs in India are showing activity levels similar to their counterparts in North America, Western Europe, and the Asia Pacific region when it comes to implementing AI technologies. EPAM Systems, a US-headquartered digital and product engineering company, has its largest development GCC in India, employing around 12,000 professionals and building AI expertise to serve enterprises worldwide.

“We believe that GCCs are going to be an important customer base and will continue to focus on them going forward,” Fejes said.

India has established itself as a global hub for GCCs, with around 1,800 units currently operating in the country. This segment is expected to see continued growth as more companies from developed economies plan to set up GCCs in India to access the country’s deep tech talent pool.

Speaking on the broader technology shifts driven by AI, Fejes acknowledged that while there is significant excitement around the technology, much remains to be done before it achieves widespread enterprise adoption.

“AI has tremendous capabilities and benefits, but in order to really take advantage of it, one needs to be a very good engineer,” he said. Fejes explained that while AI can accelerate parts of a process, developing complete enterprise-ready solutions still demands strong software engineering skills.

He added that current efficiency gains from AI are not yet substantial, but the technology is opening doors for new opportunities as organisations create fresh applications and services.

According to Fejes, all enterprise clients are exploring AI in some form, each with its own objectives such as improving efficiency or driving optimisation. While few organisations have dedicated AI budgets, several are moving ahead with implementation.

EPAM Systems is also transitioning towards deeper AI integration, aiming to enhance the productivity and effectiveness of its engineers. The company is building frameworks for AI delivery that include governance models, architectural foundations, and structured implementation approaches.
