Elon Musk warns AI may exceed human intelligence within a decade

A rapidly accelerating wave of artificial intelligence development could soon reshape how intelligence itself is defined. Elon Musk has cautioned that AI systems may surpass the combined intelligence of humanity far sooner than many expect, pointing to an unusually fast pace of technological progress.

The Tesla and xAI chief said AI could overtake human intelligence within the next decade. He added that machines more capable than any individual human may emerge much earlier. Musk even suggested this threshold could be reached as early as late this year, or by 2031 at the latest.

Musk has consistently described AI as both a powerful opportunity and a serious risk. While his companies continue to invest heavily in AI research and deployment, he has repeatedly called for stronger oversight and regulation of the technology. His latest remarks come amid growing concern that advanced AI systems could outthink humans, raising ethical and safety questions. These concerns have also been linked to recent debates surrounding xAI’s Grok chatbot.

Alongside his comments on AI, Musk shared updates on Tesla’s regulatory progress. He said the company is close to securing European approval for its Full Self-Driving advanced driver assistance system. According to Musk, Tesla is hopeful that supervised Full Self-Driving could receive approval in Europe as early as next month. He added that a similar approval timeline is being targeted in China.

Musk also made his first appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday. The move marks a notable shift for the billionaire, who has previously criticised the annual gathering. His presence at the forum comes at a time of increased scrutiny over his companies, public statements, and influence across multiple industries.

Ethical concerns around AI remain a key issue. Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has faced criticism following reports of sexualised content generated by its Grok chatbot. The episode has renewed discussions around content moderation and ethical safeguards in generative AI systems.

Despite ongoing challenges and criticism, Musk continues to be a central figure in global conversations on AI, regulation, and the future direction of emerging technologies.
