Elon Musk Bids Farewell to Trump Admin Amid Critique of ‘Big Beautiful’ Spending Bill

In a move that stirred political circles, tech mogul Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role as a Special Government Employee in the Trump administration. With a note of finality and subtle defiance, Musk took to X to announce his departure, ending his advisory role focused on reforming government expenditure.

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” Musk wrote.

A White House insider, who chose to remain unnamed, confirmed Musk’s exit. His departure comes in the wake of his pointed disapproval of President Trump’s centerpiece policy proposal, a sweeping tax and immigration reform the president has fondly named his “big beautiful bill.”

Just a day prior, Musk told a popular news outlet,

“I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful. But I don’t know if it could be both,”

labeling it a “massive spending bill.”

His words found resonance among fiscal hawks. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin echoed Musk’s sentiment, expressing frustration over excessive spending. “I sympathise with Elon being discouraged,” Johnson shared during an event in Milwaukee. He added that internal Republican resistance might stall the bill unless there’s genuine commitment to cut costs.

Meanwhile, President Trump addressed the growing criticism in the Oval Office, defending the bill’s complexity.

“I’m not happy about certain aspects of it, but I’m thrilled by other aspects of it. We’re going to see what happens. It’s got a way to go,” he said.

The proposed legislation has already passed the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson urged the Senate not to tamper with the current draft, warning that any significant edits could disrupt the fragile political consensus.

Musk’s dramatic exit adds further tension to the ongoing debate, exposing deep divides within conservative leadership over the future path of US fiscal strategy.
