ED Starts Money Laundering Probe in UP Conversion Case

The Enforcement Directorate has launched a money laundering investigation into an alleged religious conversion racket in Uttar Pradesh. The case is based on a complaint filed by the state’s Anti-Terrorism Squad, which earlier uncovered suspicious financial activities connected to forced religious conversions.

According to officials, the money laundering probe involves foreign funds exceeding ₹100 crore, traced through nearly 40 bank accounts linked to Chhangur Baba, also known as Jamaluddin, his family members, and close associates. These funds are suspected to have been used to influence or pressure people, including women and minors, to convert their religion.

Investigators found that Neetu Rohera received ₹13.9 crore in her bank account within just four months, out of which ₹5 crore came from foreign sources. Two accounts under the name of Ghanshyam Rohera also saw large inflows of ₹16.22 crore and ₹18.66 crore respectively, with several of these money transactions reportedly coming from the UAE.

The ED is now examining whether these transactions violated provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. The agency is also looking into the use of foreign funding routes and shell entities that may have been used to move money into the country illegally.

Alongside the financial probe, authorities have also demolished a mansion located in Balrampur, which is believed to have been the central base of operations for the conversion network.

Chhangur Baba, Neetu Rohera, and three other individuals have already been arrested and are currently in custody as the investigation progresses.

This case marks a major step by enforcement agencies to crack down on the financial channels supporting illegal religious conversions, with special focus on international remittances and shadow organisations believed to be involved in the operation.
