In a recent development, Unity Bank Plc has announced the appointment of Mr. Ebenezer Kolawole as the Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO). This transition follows the retirement of Mrs. Oluwatomi Somefun, who completed her term as MD/CEO. The announcement was made at the bank’s 18th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Lagos on Wednesday.
The bank has confirmed that the appointment has received the official approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Mr. Kolawole brings with him more than three decades of invaluable experience in banking and financial services, which will serve him well in this new role.

His career trajectory continued at Standard Trust Bank (STB), where he played a key role in the STB/UBA merger. Following the merger, he served as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at the United Bank for Africa (UBA).
His expertise further expanded during his time at Mainstreet Bank, where he led transformation and turnaround initiatives as the Group Chief Finance Officer (GCFO). In addition, Kolawole briefly worked at Globacom, Nigeria’s prominent telecommunications company, contributing to its corporate business development.
Kolawole holds a first-class honours degree in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, and has participated in executive education programs at prestigious institutions such as Columbia Business School, New York, USA, and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA.
