The East India Company That Once Ruled India Is Now Owned by an Indian

The East India Company, which once ruled India for nearly 200 years, is now owned by an Indian-origin businessman. Sanjiv Mehta, an Indian-born British entrepreneur, is the current owner and CEO of the historic East India Company.

Established in England on December 31, 1600, the East India Company was originally formed as a trading company under a special charter from the British Crown. Over time, it gained immense power and privileges, especially across India and East Asia. What started as trade relations with Indian rulers gradually turned into political and military dominance, eventually leading to the Battle of Plassey on June 23, 1757. This battle marked the beginning of British control in Bengal and set the stage for the company’s eventual control over much of India.

Following the victory in Plassey, the East India Company expanded its military influence rapidly across the Indian subcontinent. However, its oppressive policies led to widespread resentment and the 1857 revolution, known as the First War of Indian Independence. After this uprising, the British Crown abolished the company’s rule and took direct control of India, ending its charter completely in 1874.

India finally gained independence on August 15, 1947, marking the end of British rule. By then, the East India Company had long lost its political power and had become a relic of the past.

In a remarkable twist of history, Sanjiv Mehta, an Indian, now owns the company that once dominated his homeland. Under his leadership, the East India Company has been revived as a luxury brand. It now deals in premium products such as fine teas, coffees, beverages, gourmet food items, luxury gift hampers, and high-end homeware.

The company, though no longer a colonial power, still carries a historic name, now transformed into a brand that reflects heritage and exclusivity, led by someone from the very country it once ruled.
