E-commerce Firms Tighten Cybersecurity Measures Ahead of Festive Season Surge

As India approaches its festive shopping season, e-commerce companies are moving to strengthen cybersecurity to curb rising fraud, industry experts reported.

At a recent panel held by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, major e-commerce platforms including Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho called for industry wide cooperation to reduce instances of fraudulent sellers.

One scam involved a woman in Mumbai who received a delivery as expected, only to receive persistent calls from “delivery agents” demanding payment for a duplicate parcel she had not ordered. The caller even sent tracking details and pushed for an OTP to “cancel” the delivery.

Such incidents are increasing, especially as festive sales approach. Experts estimate that online fraud cases rise by 20-25 per cent during high-volume shopping periods.

To counter this, e-commerce firms are boosting their fraud detection systems, working to verify sellers more strictly, and putting in place stronger consumer protection policies. Collaboration across platforms is seen as key to identifying bad actors and stopping scams before they spread.

Consumers are also being urged to stay alert: don’t share OTPs, verify seller credentials, and report suspicious activity immediately.

With the combination of stricter controls, better technology, and industry cooperation, e-commerce firms aim to make the festive season safer for both buyers and sellers.
