DuckDuckGo adds real-time voice chat to Duck.ai with strong privacy focus

A quieter but meaningful update is changing how users interact with DuckDuckGo’s AI tool. The company has rolled out a real-time voice chat feature for Duck.ai, allowing users to speak directly to the AI and receive instant spoken or text responses, while keeping privacy at the centre of the experience.

The new feature, called “New Voice Chat,” makes AI conversations more natural and interactive. Since its launch in March 2025, Duck.ai has offered access to leading AI models such as GPT-4o mini and Claude 3.5 Haiku, without requiring users to create an account. With the latest update, users can now click and start talking to the AI in real time, instead of only typing queries.

Privacy remains a key part of Duck.ai’s design. DuckDuckGo says voice data is held only briefly during a session to generate transcripts and is then permanently deleted. The company added that neither DuckDuckGo nor OpenAI stores these conversations or uses them to train AI models.

There are also strict contractual limits on how OpenAI can handle user data. Audio is not used for training and is processed only to deliver the service, or in limited situations such as safety or legal compliance. To further protect users, DuckDuckGo said it does not try to identify users, fingerprint voices, or link voice data back to individuals.

For now, the voice chat feature is available only on certain browsers and comes with daily usage limits. Firefox users are currently not supported. DuckDuckGo has confirmed that more updates are planned.

Future improvements are expected to include web search integration, image upload support, and expanded availability on mobile devices. These additions aim to make Duck.ai more capable, while maintaining the company’s long-standing focus on user privacy.
