DRDO says 90% of astronaut support systems for Gaganyaan are ready

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced that it has completed around 90% of the work on astronaut support systems for the upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission. The technologies and equipment developed for the mission will be tested during ISRO’s first uncrewed test flight, scheduled in the coming months.

What DRDO Has Developed

Scientists said eight DRDO laboratories have contributed to different systems required for astronauts, including:

  • Space food and hydration solutions
  • Parachutes and emergency survival kits
  • Medical and first-aid supplies
  • Noise cancellation devices and fire suppression systems
  • Radiation monitoring and protection equipment

A key development is the Bio-Vest, a textile-based health monitoring suit that will:

  • Continuously track vital signs like ECG, SpO₂, heart rate, and temperature
  • Send real-time health data to ground control
  • Remain operational during launch, orbit stay, and re-entry
  • Focus on Safety & Zero-Gravity Testing

Although these systems have been validated in laboratories, they must now undergo zero-gravity (microgravity) trials to confirm performance in space conditions.

Scientists emphasized that food and medicines need rigorous testing to ensure:

  • No microbial contamination
  • Long shelf life
  • Stable chemical composition in space

ISRO’s Mission Update

ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan recently stated that overall mission work is 90% complete and the first of three uncrewed flights is planned for December. Ensuring astronaut safety remains the top priority.

Next Steps

  • More testing is scheduled in the coming weeks to verify:
  • Radiation protection systems
  • Emergency rescue equipment
  • Life-support functions during extended mission duration

The Gaganyaan mission will make India the fourth nation to send humans into space using an indigenous spacecraft, marking a major milestone in the country’s space journey.
