DRDO Hands Over Technology for 9 Defence Systems to Boost India’s Self-Reliance in Military Production

In a powerful step towards strengthening India’s defence manufacturing sector, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has officially transferred the production technologies of nine key land and weapon systems to various public and private enterprises. This transfer is part of the government’s broader mission to establish a self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry.

The technology handover ceremony took place at the Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (VRDE), a DRDO laboratory situated near Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. The event marked a pivotal moment as both state-owned and private firms received licences to manufacture these strategic systems.

Among the notable technologies transferred was the tracked Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) reconnaissance vehicle (Mark-II), handed over to Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). Bharat Forge, a prominent name in the private sector, received the rights to produce the advanced mounted artillery gun system.

Other significant transfers included the tracked anti-terrorist vehicle to Metaltech Motor Bodies Private Limited, expandable mobile shelters to BEL, and Vajra riot control vehicles to Tata Advanced Systems Limited. Multi-purpose decontamination system technology was granted to Dass Hitachi Limited and Goma Engineering Private Limited.

Additionally, platforms associated with the Arjun main battle tank saw vital support. The full trailer tank transporter will now be developed by BEML, Tata International Vehicle Applications, SDR Auto Private Limited, and John Galt International. BEML was also entrusted with technologies for the Arjun tank’s maintenance and repair vehicles.

DRDO chairman Samir V Kamat, speaking at the event, highlighted the success of indigenous platforms during Operation Sindoor, particularly the Akash air defence system. “The outstanding performance of our homegrown systems demonstrates the capability of our industry,” he remarked. He also encouraged companies to prepare for scale-up during emergencies, urging a forward-thinking approach to national security needs.

This strategic push aligns with the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, empowering Indian firms to become global leaders in defence technology and production.
