As the United States prepares to mark 250 years of independence, a proposed commemorative coin featuring President Donald Trump is drawing both attention and debate.
The 24-karat gold coin will depict Mr. Trump leaning on the Resolute Desk with clenched fists. If issued, it would mark only the second time a sitting U.S. President has appeared on a coin. Previously, President Calvin Coolidge featured alongside George Washington on a commemorative coin minted in 1926 to mark 150 years of U.S. independence.
The design was approved by the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts during its March 19 meeting. The coin will be minted once final specifications, including dimensions, are decided.
“As we approach our 250th birthday, we are thrilled to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, and there is no profile more emblematic for the front of such coins than that of our serving President, Donald J. Trump,” U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach said in a statement to FOX Business.
The proposal has raised legal and political questions. U.S. federal law prohibits living presidents from appearing on currency. However, officials clarified that the coin would be commemorative and not part of circulating currency, with final approval resting with the Treasury Secretary.
The move has also faced criticism. Democrats have called the idea inappropriate, arguing it goes against democratic values. “Monarchs and dictators put their faces on coins, not leaders of a democracy,” Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) was quoted as saying.
The coin is expected to be part of a broader set of special-edition currencies and medals planned for the 250th anniversary celebrations.
Critics view the proposal as part of a wider effort by Mr. Trump to leave a lasting imprint on national institutions. Recent developments include renaming the Kennedy Centre as the Trump-Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts and adding the President’s name to the U.S. Institute of Peace building.
Mr. Trump has also proposed changes to the White House grounds, including a visitor screening center and plans to replace the East Wing with a new ballroom.
