Disney faces backlash after revealing plans to allow AI generated content on Disney Plus

Waves of criticism spread across social media after Disney chief executive Bob Iger confirmed that the company will soon introduce AI generated content tools for Disney+ users. The announcement surfaced during an ‘earnings call’ for the fourth quarter of 2025, where Iger described the update as one of the biggest products and technology changes since the platform’s launch in 2019.

During the call, Iger said the company was excited about the new direction, explaining that AI would give subscribers the ability to create their own user generated content and view short form creations made by others. The response from fans was overwhelmingly negative. Many expressed fears that expanding AI generated material would cause job losses, reduce creative quality and undermine the values they associate with the company. Some viewers even called for a boycott and encouraged others to support animation studios that have spoken out against generative AI.

Dana Terrace, creator of the animated series The Owl House, urged fans to pirate her show. Her reaction reflected broader concerns among creatives who feel that AI is becoming a serious threat to artistic industries. Recent controversies include fake music groups reaching the top of major charts, the debut of an AI actress named Tilly Norwood by a Dutch creator and widespread criticism of a major company for using generative AI in a Christmas advertisement that many described as disturbing.

These worries are backed by a global study from a streaming service and a research firm which found that 97% of people cannot tell the difference between real music and AI generated tracks. The same survey reported that only 19% of respondents trust AI and 51% believe that using AI in music production could result in music that sounds generic.

Many fear that this shift could fundamentally change how audiences experience music and entertainment in the future and this growing concern is now aimed at the direction Disney is choosing to pursue.
