Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has severed its association with Çelebi Airport Services India and Çelebi Delhi Cargo Terminal Management after a crucial security order from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). This decision brings a major shift in ground handling and cargo management at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), where Çelebi had been a key service provider for years.
Previously, Çelebi was entrusted with ground operations and cargo terminal management at IGIA. With the termination of their contracts, DIAL is now collaborating closely with its existing partners, AISATS and Bird Group, to ensure smooth airport operations and prevent any disruption in services.
For cargo handling, DIAL is onboarding a pre-approved handler to maintain operational continuity. Importantly, DIAL has assured that all Çelebi employees at IGIA will be retained under new management without any changes to their employment terms.
“DIAL assures passengers, airlines, and cargo stakeholders that every effort is being made to maintain high standards of service and operational efficiency throughout the transition,” the airport authority stated.
Çelebi’s removal follows the Indian government’s withdrawal of its security clearance over national security apprehensions. The Turkish company operated at nine airports across India and managed approximately 70 percent of ground services at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
On a broader scale, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has instructed all airports affected by Çelebi’s departure to make temporary arrangements with alternative service providers. Sources from a reputed media outlet revealed that tenders will soon be invited to appoint new ground handling companies at these locations.
Çelebi had extensive operational access, covering passenger check-ins, ramp services, load control, general aviation support, and cargo handling, granting it control over sensitive airport areas.
Reacting to the development, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu emphasized that “national interest and public safety are paramount and non-negotiable.” He confirmed that efforts are underway to ensure seamless passenger and cargo services during this transition. The minister also reassured that employees currently working with Çelebi would continue to be retained and contribute to airport operations.
