In an effort to address rising screen addiction among children, Dharashiv district in Maharashtra will implement a daily 2-hour ban on mobile phones and television across villages.
The initiative, led by the Zilla Parishad, will be enforced from 7 pm to 9 pm across 712 gram panchayats. During this time, residents are expected to switch off TVs and mobile devices.
The move comes amid growing concerns that excessive screen time is affecting students’ academic focus and discipline. Authorities aim to create a structured environment that encourages children to dedicate time to studies.
To ensure compliance, sirens will be sounded at the start and end of the restriction period. Around 750 government staff will be deployed across villages to monitor and support implementation.
Officials said the broader objective is to reduce digital dependency and promote healthier study habits. The initiative also seeks to limit distractions from social media and entertainment during key evening hours.
The step reflects increasing efforts at the local level to manage digital overuse, especially among younger populations. Its effectiveness, however, will depend on active participation from families and communities.
