Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says AI Can’t Think Like Humans Yet …

Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, but are we close to creating machines that match human intelligence? Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, suggests that we are not there yet, although progress is being made, according to a report by Media.

Hassabis discussed the future of AI and the ongoing debate surrounding artificial general intelligence (AGI). This type of AI is capable of thinking, learning, and executing any task at least as well as a human. While AGI has not been achieved yet, he believes it is only a matter of time before it arrives.

“I think today’s systems, they’re very passive,” Hassabis explained. “There’s still a lot of things they can’t do. But I think over the next five to 10 years, a lot of those capabilities will start coming to the fore and we’ll start moving towards what we call artificial general intelligence.”

In essence, AGI refers to an AI that can perform a wide range of activities—such as problem-solving, reasoning, creativity, and adapting to new situations—rather than just excelling in specific areas like essay writing or chess. Hassabis acknowledges that we are still a way off from reaching this goal.

“These systems are very impressive at certain things. But there are other things they can’t do yet, and we’ve still got quite a lot of research work to go before that.”
