Delhi tops cybercrime cases as incidents surge sharply across India

Rising digital activity has brought a sharp increase in cyber threats, with Delhi emerging as the country’s leading hotspot for cyber fraud cases. The government informed the Lok Sabha that cybercrime incidents have more than doubled since 2021, with the highest number reported from the National Capital Region.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar shared data tracked by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, highlighting a steady rise in cyber incidents over the past 5 years.

Cyber incidents recorded year-wise are:

  • 2021 – 1,402,809
  • 2022 – 1,391,457
  • 2023 – 1,592,917
  • 2024 – 2,041,360
  • 2025 – 2,944,248

To tackle cyber threats, CERT-In issues regular alerts and advisories. The government is also strengthening cybersecurity through initiatives like the National Cyber Coordination Centre, Cyber Swachhta Kendra, and the “Cyber Bharat Setu” programme.

Through the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting & Management System (CFCFRMS), more than 2.465 million complaints helped prevent fraud worth over ₹8,690 crore.

The National Digital Forensic Assistance Centre supported over 13,417 cybercrime cases. More than 151,000 police and judicial officers registered on the ‘CITRAN’ platform, and over 142,000 certificates were issued.

Under the Cyber Crime Registry, over 2.305 million suspects were identified, helping prevent transactions worth ₹9,518.91 crore. With support from coordination platforms, more than 21,857 accused have been arrested.

The Enforcement Directorate has investigated around 257 cybercrime-related cases under PMLA provisions as of February 28, 2026, identifying ₹35,925.58 crore in illicit proceeds.

Experts say these figures highlight the growing scale of cybercrime and raise concerns about the safety of digital financial transactions across the country. The government clarified that state-wise data on cybercrime proceeds is not maintained by the ED.

Officials added that new initiatives and digital platforms are being developed to improve awareness and protect citizens. CERT-In continues to compile financial loss data in real time to support quick action.

Experts warn that with increasing digital dependence and rising online transactions, cybercrime incidents may continue to grow, making stronger surveillance, awareness, and legal enforcement essential.
