Delhi Police introduces e-FIR facility for cybercrime victims losing Rs 1 lakh or more

Victims of cybercrime who have lost Rs 1 lakh or more can now file an e-FIR, a facility that was earlier available only in cases involving losses of Rs 10 lakh or above. The initiative will officially be launched on November 1. Victims can register an e-FIR either by calling the 1930 helpline or by visiting any police station.

Devesh Chandra Srivastava, Special Commissioner of Police (Crime), said that under the new system, call takers on the helpline will register complaints directly on the online portal. “The other major feature is that victims can visit any police station and file an e-FIR with the assistance of the newly established integrated help desk staff,” he said. Once registered, the e-FIR will be forwarded to the concerned cyber police station for investigation.

According to the police, this policy shift aims to ensure faster legal action and better support for victims of online financial crimes. A 24-hour help desk has been set up at every police station, and there will be no jurisdictional limits in filing such complaints. All interactions will be recorded, and confidentiality will be maintained throughout the process.

The registered e-FIRs will be investigated by the jurisdictional cyber police stations, the crime branch, and the specialised IFSO unit. Authorities said one of the main objectives is to ensure a “prompt and thorough investigation within 72 hours,” which could increase the chances of recovering stolen funds.

Complainants will receive regular updates about their case, including acknowledgements, actions taken, and closure notes on e-FIR. Police will monitor progress with the investigating officers and share periodic feedback via SMS, phone calls, or emails. Citizens will also be encouraged to provide feedback through a prescribed form.

Police have urged residents to remain alert against online fraud and scams. They confirmed that cyber safety awareness campaigns and workshops will continue both online and offline, targeting vulnerable groups such as children, women, and senior citizens.

In 2023, 1,347 cybercrime cases were registered with total losses of about Rs 183 crore. The number rose to 1,591 cases in 2024, with losses increasing sharply to Rs 817 crore. In 2025, up to June, 184 cases were reported, with victims losing around Rs 70.6 crore.
