India is on the verge of a transportation revolution, as the Avishkar Hyperloop project at IIT Madras successfully completes its first test. Revealed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday, this high-speed transit system promises to drastically reduce travel time, making the 300-kilometre journey between Delhi and Jaipur possible in under 30 minutes.
The first-ever hyperloop test track in the country, located in Chennai, was built by IIT Madras in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways. The 422-metre-long track is a critical step toward the development of this groundbreaking transport technology.
What is Hyperloop? Hyperloop, often referred to as the ‘fifth mode of transport,’ uses vacuum tubes to transport pods at speeds of up to 1,100 km/h. The idea is to create a near-frictionless environment where passengers can travel long distances at incredible speeds, making it a game-changer for intercity travel.
Once fully realized, the system could cover distances of up to 350 kilometres in just 30 minutes, drastically reducing travel times. This means passengers could travel from Delhi to Jaipur in the same time it currently takes to make a quick commute.
Key Developments The Avishkar Hyperloop project, funded and supported by Indian Railways and L&T Constructions, is gaining momentum. Two grants of $1 million each have already been provided to the initiative, and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that a third $1 million grant will soon be awarded to further develop the technology.
Vaishnaw remarked, “The first pod of 422 metres will go a long way in developing technologies. I think the time has come when, after the first two grants of one million dollars each, the third grant of one million dollars will be given to IIT Madras for further developing the hyperloop project.”
The Road Ahead The successful test of the 422-metre track is just the beginning. The next steps involve scaling up the technology and constructing longer tracks to enable commercial operation. If successful, this could dramatically change the way India thinks about transportation, making long-distance travel faster and more efficient.
