Deepfake takedowns surge as platforms scale up action, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Amid rapid advances in artificial intelligence, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has raised concerns over the rising spread of AI-generated deepfakes and their impact on society. He noted that social media platforms have also increased efforts to remove such misleading content.

Calling deepfakes a serious issue, Vaishnaw said, “A lot of content has started coming in the nature of deepfakes. Because of whatever changes have happened in the AI world, a huge quantity of deepfakes have started coming in the social media… the entire world, and the social media platforms themselves have significantly ramped up their efforts at removing the deepfakes,”

He added that platforms have almost doubled or tripled their takedown actions against deepfake content in response to the surge.

Describing the trend as a growing concern, he said, “It’s a new menace, new threat, which is coming for the society,” and stressed that addressing it effectively is crucial for individuals, institutions, and society at large.
