Cybercriminals are turning to a powerful new tool called SpamGPT to carry out massive phishing campaigns. Marketed on the dark web as a “spam-as-a-service” platform, the AI-driven software automates nearly every step of an email phishing attack.
The toolkit, reportedly sold for $5,000, mimics legitimate email marketing platforms and comes equipped with features such as SMTP and IMAP email servers, campaign testing, and real-time performance monitoring. By combining artificial intelligence with professional marketing techniques, attackers can launch fraudulent email campaigns with alarming ease.
One of its key elements is an AI assistant called KaliGPT, integrated into the SpamGPT dashboard. This assistant helps criminals design campaigns by suggesting subject lines, drafting persuasive messages, and even identifying target audiences. The system is designed to bypass filters and reach inboxes on major platforms, including Gmail, Microsoft 365, and Outlook, while concealing its malicious intent.
A report from a cybersecurity firm highlighted that SpamGPT significantly lowers the entry barrier for cybercrime. “SpamGPT lowers the technical barrier for running effective spam and phishing campaigns,” the report stated. “What used to require a team of skilled developers can now be accomplished by a single bad actor with a $5,000 toolkit.”
Experts have warned that as cybercriminals continue to adopt generative AI, organisations must step up defenses. Recommendations include deploying AI-powered security tools, enhancing email monitoring systems, and boosting collaboration within the security community. “Staying ahead of this curve will require defenders to likewise leverage AI, monitoring, and collaboration across the security community,” the report added.
Earlier this year, security researchers also raised alarms about phishing kits exploiting Progressive Web Apps (PWAs), underscoring the urgent need for stronger protections against evolving digital threats.
