A 60-year-old businessman was reportedly swindled out of ₹7.76 lakh by cyber fraudsters who convinced him that his bank account was compromised, according to police, who have since filed a case.
The cyber victim, Inderpal Singh, a resident of Guru Nanak Nagar, Dhuri Line, stated that the cybercriminals, impersonating bank employees, called him multiple times requesting his debit card information. Although he insisted he did not disclose any details, he later discovered that funds had been withdrawn from his account.
Singh received a call from an unknown number on February 20, where the caller, claiming to be a bank representative, warned him about a potential hacking threat to his account and requested his debit card information to ‘protect’ it. He reported that he hung up without sharing any information.
The following day, he received a similar call from a different number, which raised his suspicions about a possible scam. Concerned, he turned off his phone. When he powered it back on a few hours later, he received a notification indicating that money had been withdrawn from his account, prompting him to report the incident to the police.
Cyber crime station-house officer (SHO) inspector Satvir Singh said it is unlikely that such a transaction could have been made without some form of access. “It is possible that the elderly victim unknowingly clicked on a malicious link, granting the fraudsters access to his account or mobile,” the inspector said.
In the course of their cybercrime investigation, police discovered that the money that was transferred was withdrawn on the same day. Authorities are currently monitoring the bank accounts where the funds were deposited in order to locate and capture the fraudsters. The case has been filed under sections 319 (2) (cheating by impersonation) and 318 (4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
