Cybercrime fraud has reached alarming levels in Visakhapatnam

With 117 incidents reported, 135 people detained, and 40 charge sheets submitted, cybercrime fraud has escalated to worrying proportions throughout the Visakhapatnam police area, according to statistics from the DIG office.

The district of Srikakulam recorded 35 cybercrime occurrences, the most of any district. Thirty of the forty-five apprehended suspects were issued with forty-one CrPC notices, and fifteen charge sheets have been filed. After that, Anakapalli filed 28 cases with 30 accused people, 24 of whom were given CrPC notices, and 14 charge sheets. There have been 21 arrests and 28 accused in 24 instances in the Manyam area, but no charge papers have been submitted as of yet. 15 cases involving 19 accused were registered in Vizianagaram, while eight charge sheets and 13 CrPC notifications were filed. Additionally, the ASR district recorded 15 instances with 13 defendants, resulting in three charge sheets and seven arrests.

Residents of Andhra Pradesh are reportedly losing between ₹15 and ₹20 crore each month as a result of cyber scams that are planned from Cambodia and other Southeast Asian nations, according to sources. These activities have been connected to three main types of fraud: task-based scams, digital arrest schemes, and stock trading and investment frauds.

A 40-year-old Visakhapatnam private employee lost more than ₹50 lakh in a stock trading fraud not long ago. After being first enticed by a mobile link that promised returns of 150–200%, the victim was connected to WhatsApp and Telegram groups where scammers showed fictitious profit statements and charts. Once the victim deposited all of his ₹50 lakh in funds, the scammers disappeared after allowing tiny withdrawals to establish confidence.

Locals, including famous residents and computer experts, are losing at least ₹15 crore a month to such scams, according to cybercrime officials.

“Victims often fall prey due to a lack of verification, over-reliance on social media, and greed for quick returns,” said K. Bhavani Prasad, Inspector at the Cybercrime Police Station.

In relation to cybercrime recruiting, police recently apprehended 20 offenders and saved 85 Indian teenagers. These victims were forced into international fraud operations after being transported to cybercrime hotspots in Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos, underscoring the expanding worldwide network of cybercrime syndicates.
