COIMBATORE: A man from Delhi has been sentenced to six years in prison and fined Rs 1.5 lakh for cybercrime by the Coimbatore District Judicial Magistrate on Monday. The individual, identified as Gopi Kumar (42), operated two companies in Delhi.
According to police reports, on November 18, 2024, a resident of Sulur received a call from an unknown number. The caller, posing as a FedEx employee, informed her that a parcel addressed to her contained illegal items and instructed her to contact a fake cyber crime official in Mumbai via Skype for verification.
Under the guise of this verification process, the scammer acquired her banking information and persuaded her to transfer Rs 10 lakh to his account. Once she realized she had been defrauded, the victim filed a complaint with the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.
The police noted that a case was registered at the Coimbatore Cybercrime Police Station under Section 318(4) of the BNS and Section 66D of the IT Act.
Subsequent investigations uncovered fraudulent transactions associated with Kumar’s companies: Compact Corporation Pvt. Ltd. and Nihansh Corporation Pvt. Ltd., both located in New Delhi. His accounts were linked to multiple scams totaling Rs 29.14 lakh across various states.
A special team apprehended Kumar in Delhi on January 22, 2025, and a chargesheet was submitted within 20 days. After 55 days, the JM 4 court in Coimbatore sentenced him to six years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh.
