14 Sri Lankans who had been trafficked and forced to work in cybercrime centers in Myawaddy, Myanmar, were successfully rescued through a concerted effort by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Sri Lankan Embassies in Myanmar and Thailand, and the governments of Myanmar and Thailand.
On March 18, 2025, the rescued people are expected to return to Sri Lanka.
This successful operation comes after years of diplomatic efforts by Sri Lanka, including recent phone calls between Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa on February 13, 2025, and Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister of Foreign Affairs U Than Swe on February 3, 2024, with Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath.
During these interactions, Minister Herath underlined the critical need for aid in the rescue and repatriation of Sri Lankan people who have been trafficked.
Sincere gratitude was shown by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism to the governments of Thailand and Myanmar for their crucial support in the safe return and rescue of the Sri Lankans who had been trafficked.
The Ministry also thanked various foreign non-governmental organizations in Myanmar for their welfare help during this process, as well as the foreign Organization for Migration (IOM) for providing internal and international air transportation.
With ongoing assistance from Thai and Myanmar authorities, as well as in coordination with Sri Lankan embassies in Thailand and Myanmar, the Ministry stated that it is still dedicated to ensuring the rescue and return of the remaining Sri Lankans who have been trafficked.
When looking for work abroad, the Ministry strongly advises the people to be on the lookout for human trafficking schemes. Before obtaining work abroad, Sri Lankans are encouraged to carefully follow government-approved protocols and confirm job openings with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign work (SLBFE). hospital.
