Cybercrime Cases Surge in Madhya Pradesh

Madhya Pradesh is facing a worrying rise in cybercrime, with 34,021 cases reported in the first six months of 2025. This translates to an average of 189 cases every day or around 8 incidents every hour. The figures were presented in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday and show a steep rise in cybercrime in the state over recent years.

In 2021, Madhya Pradesh recorded 13,768 cybercrime cases. This number increased to 26,053 in 2022, rose further to 52,846 in 2023, and then to 68,578 in 2024. Now, with over 34,000 cases already reported in just half of 2025, the state may surpass the previous year’s figures by the end of the year.

Nationally, Madhya Pradesh ranks 12th in terms of cybercrime incidents. The states with higher numbers include Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Telangana.

During a discussion in the Rajya Sabha, Jose K Mani raised a question regarding a 900 per cent increase in cyber frauds across India between 2021 and 2025, based on data from the National Cyber Reporting Platform. He also asked for state-wise and year-wise data on reported cases and the steps taken to address this issue.

Responding to the query, Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, said that “police and public order” are state responsibilities under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution. He added that the states and union territories are primarily responsible for handling cybercrime through their law enforcement agencies.

The minister explained that the central government supports these efforts by issuing advisories and offering financial assistance under various schemes to strengthen the capacity of law enforcement agencies. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also established the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to address cybercrimes in a coordinated and comprehensive way.

Additionally, a toll-free helpline number 1930 has been made available to assist in lodging online cybercrime complaints. As per police reports, the central government has helped block over 9.42 lakh SIM cards and 2,63,348 IMEIs so far.
