A sustained focus on prevention and faster response helped Cyberabad Police Commissionerate register a major decline in cybercrime incidents in 2025.
According to official data released on Tuesday, the commissionerate recorded 7,636 cybercrime cases in 2025, down from 11,914 cases in 2024, marking a reduction of about 36 percent. Along with fewer cases, financial losses from cyber fraud also dropped significantly to Rs 404.61 crore in 2025, compared to Rs 793.18 crore the previous year.
Police action also led to improved recovery outcomes. Through timely intervention, authorities were able to freeze accounts and refund Rs 54.67 crore to cyber fraud victims during the year.
While overall cases declined, the number of petitions received rose slightly to 31,569 in 2025 from 30,883 in 2024. Officials attributed this increase mainly to a higher number of complaints involving losses below Rs 25,000. Such low value petitions increased to 19,059 in 2025, compared to 17,916 in 2024.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty said part time job fraud remained the most commonly reported offence, accounting for 2,079 cases. This was followed by trading fraud with 1,256 cases and smishing fraud with 689 cases. Despite fewer incidents, trading fraud resulted in the highest financial losses.
A notable improvement was seen in digital arrest fraud cases. These fell sharply from 1,002 cases in 2024 to 117 cases in 2025, reflecting a significant improvement in public awareness and enforcement efforts.
“‘Digital Arrest’ fraud has seen almost a 90 percent reduction this year when compared to the previous year. We do not take the entire credit, but credit goes to the citizens from all sections of the society for their proactive approach,” the commissioner said.
Officials said the overall decline was driven by continuous cyber awareness campaigns, quicker freezing of fraudulent accounts, and close coordination with banks and service providers. These measures, they added, have strengthened the response to cyber threats and helped reduce both cases and losses across the region.
