In a major crackdown on online fraud, the Cybercrime Wing of Cyberabad Police detected ten cybercrime cases and arrested twenty offenders from different states between October 22 and 28. The operation also led to the seizure of twenty-four mobile phones and nineteen SIM cards used in the crimes.
Among the arrested, fourteen were involved in online trading frauds. A key highlight of the operation was the busting of a ₹3 crore scam targeting a leading travel company’s online ticket booking and digital wallet system, which resulted in the arrest of five individuals. The accused were identified as Chennupati Sivannarayana, Kadali Narayana Swamy, Anugula Rajkumar, Jadda Brahmaiah, and Pericherla Varma.
According to the police, the travel company, which operates across several southern states, detected irregularities between May and July this year. The company noticed a mismatch between the number of tickets booked and the revenue received. A detailed audit revealed that some registered users and internal agents had exploited a glitch in the company’s digital wallet refund mechanism.
Investigations found that the accused recharged their wallets, booked tickets, and then immediately cancelled them. Due to a software flaw, both the refund and the original wallet amount were credited back, effectively doubling their balance. By repeating this process multiple times, they inflated their wallet balances and used them to book tickets for customers, while diverting the fares into their personal accounts.
The manipulation caused a total loss of ₹3,00,91,683 to the company.
Police have urged companies and individuals to regularly audit their digital payment and refund systems, ensure strict internal access controls, and promptly report any suspicious transactions to the National Cybercrime Helpline at 1930 or through the portal www.cybercrime.gov.in.
