Cyber Fraud Surges in Lucknow Prompt Police to Deploy 60 Tech Experts

As cyber fraud cases in the state capital surpass street crimes, police have begun assigning 60 specialized cyber experts to 54 police stations throughout the city. This initiative aims to address the increasing prevalence of digital scams, which are estimated to result in daily losses of ₹20 lakh, according to Brijesh Yadav, the station house officer (SHO) at the Lucknow cyber police station.

These trained personnel will enhance the existing cyber help desks at each police station. Previously, these desks were staffed by general-duty officers lacking technical skills. Now, each station will have three cyber-trained officers dedicated to managing complaints, promptly freezing bank accounts, and taking swift digital action.

A senior officer from the joint commissionerate of police (crime) noted that this deployment of 60 cyber-trained staff is the first step in a broader strategy to place 1,000 technically skilled personnel across the city. The selected individuals already possessed a background in computers and cyber-related fields and have undergone further training to improve their technical capabilities.

Additionally, these officers have been provided with essential tools and access to digital platforms to facilitate real-time responses at the local level, as stated by an official. This initiative is expected to particularly benefit complainants from rural areas of Lucknow, who previously had to travel to the central cyber police station in Hazratganj, often resulting in delays. With trained cyber staff now available at local stations, victims can expect quicker assistance, including the ability to freeze accounts to mitigate financial losses.

“Earlier, when victims from far-off areas reached Hazratganj, the money was already withdrawn. Now they can get immediate help at their local station,” said Brijesh Yadav, SHO, cyber police station.

In the Lucknow Commissionerate, the East zone has the highest incidence of cyber fraud, with the North and Central zones following. According to the SHO, approximately 80% of cyber fraud complaints lead to FIRs, while the other 20% are addressed at the help desk without formal registration.
