Swami Supradiptananda, the secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram in Gwalior, fell victim to cyber criminals, losing over Rs 2 crore after being threatened and harassed for more than 26 days, as reported by the media. This incident is described as a case of ‘digital arrest,’ where the monk was coerced into transferring money to various bank accounts through video calls.
The cyber scam began on March 17 when Supradiptananda received a video call from someone posing as a police officer from Nashik, Maharashtra. The caller claimed that the monk was implicated in a money laundering investigation involving businessman Naresh Goyal. The cyber fraudsters persuaded him that he needed to cooperate with their inquiry to avoid legal trouble.
They insisted that Supradiptananda maintain contact via video calls, during which they pressured him to send money in several installments, claiming that this would help clear his name.
Ultimately, a total of Rs 2.52 crore was transferred to 12 different bank accounts throughout India. The cyber scammers promised to return the money by April 15, stating it was part of a verification process. When the funds were not returned as they had assured, Supradiptananda lodged a complaint with the police.
