Mumbai: A 79-year-old retired Indian Navy officer from Santacruz West fell victim to an online scam, losing Rs 1.6 lakh from his pension savings while trying to book a helicopter tour for himself and his wife. His wife, a doctor, had organized a pilgrimage to Kedarnath and Badrinath, prompting him to search for travel options online.
Between March 20 and 26, the elderly man encountered an Instagram ad from someone named Vikram Singh, who was falsely operating under the name ‘Pawan Hans Official Limited.’ Believing it to be a genuine offer, he contacted them for more information. In his police report, he mentioned that Singh initially quoted Rs 64,000 for the tour.
Persuaded by the deal, the former Navy officer transferred the money. However, the scammer later requested an additional Rs 95,992, claiming it was for travel insurance. Trusting the situation, the victim completed the second payment, as reported by the Media.
His suspicions grew when his repeated questions about the tour received vague and evasive answers. Realizing he had been scammed, he went to the Santa Cruz police, who filed a case against an unidentified individual on Friday. Police are now working to track down the fraudster by tracing the internet protocol (IP) address linked to the scam.
