Despite heightened awareness, cybercriminals persist in discovering new methods to trick individuals. Data shared in the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha reveals that in the last three years, 21,600 residents of the state have fallen victim to cyber fraud.
These scammers have stolen ₹41 crore from the people of Gujarat. Although law enforcement claims to have access to advanced tools and techniques, they have only managed to recover ₹5.37 crore from the cybercriminals thus far.
On average, 20 individuals in Gujarat become victims of cyber scams each day. Out of the ₹41 crore taken from bank accounts, only 22% has been recovered, and a mere 13% of victims have seen their money returned.
A staggering 87% of individuals lost their funds after clicking on a seemingly harmless link that appeared to be from their bank. From November 2020 to October 2023, losses amounted to ₹41 crore, with only ₹8.89 crore being retrieved.
Authorities have gathered information through various technical means, including KYC for account openings, bank transaction records, recent withdrawals, mobile location data, and the identities of the suspects, leading investigations beyond Gujarat. Banks are now in contact with the accused, and measures are being taken to combat the cyber fraudsters who have siphoned off significant amounts from the state. Concurrently, efforts to enhance public awareness are being intensified.
