A resident of Amravati Enclave in Pinjore was scammed out of ₹11.33 lakh by cyber criminals who enticed him with an online work-from-home opportunity that promised high earnings, according to police reports.
The victim, 41-year-old Karan Godara, who has a PhD in law from Panjab University, stated in his police report that he received a WhatsApp message on May 6 regarding a work-from-home offer. The message instructed him to contact a Telegram ID.
After clicking a link, he was told to communicate with someone named Raghav Patel. Initially, he was assigned simple tasks and received some payments in his account.
However, he was later given more complex tasks that required him to transfer money to various bank accounts, as reported by the police.
Between May 6 and May 8, he made several transactions to the specified bank accounts but was not allowed to withdraw any funds. Subsequently, the cyber fraudsters requested additional payments. later realizing of being duped he filed complaint to cyber police.
The cyber crime police have filed a case under Sections 316-2 (criminal breach of trust), 318-4 (cheating), and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
