Cybercrime in India is changing fast as scammers use OTP fraud, fake calls, screen sharing, call merging, call forwarding and voicemail tricks to steal money or take control of devices. Cyber expert Amit Dubey shared that criminals are now targeting people with fake overseas job offers and in some cases the victims go missing.
He said the scale of this crime is very serious. He recalled an operation about one year and six months ago in which the government rescued nearly 150 people trapped by fake job networks. These victims were taken first to Thailand and later moved to Laos. They were kept in very poor conditions, without food and were beaten.
They were forced to work as cybercriminals. Dubey said, “I do not think it was just 150 people. The actual number must be around 1.5 lakh.” He later referred to an official report that 20,000 to 25,000 Indians have disappeared “job ke naam par” in the name of jobs.
Dubey explained how these groups operate. They promise high paying jobs abroad and reach people through Instagram or other social platforms. They arrange online interviews through Skype or similar applications. Once the person is selected, they demand money for paperwork and agreements. He said, “Aapka agreement bann na hai uske liye paise bhej dijiye, contract bann na hai,” which means the victims are told to send money to prepare their contract.
After this, the victims are asked to come to a location for joining. When they arrive, they are moved to Laos and kept in unused buildings in areas that are outside the strict control of the two countries. They are then tortured and forced into cybercrime activities.
Dubey also warned about cyber scams driven by artificial intelligence. He explained that easily available AI tools can create very convincing fake identities. He said that teenage users are now becoming targets. Criminals use AI generated faces and chatbots to gain trust and manipulate victims into cyber scams.
He urged people to stay alert and cautious, especially when dealing with job offers from unknown sources on social media.
