Cyber Criminal Arrested in Rs 5.62 Crore Fraud Case Covering 33 Incidents

A 54-year-old cyber criminal involved in frauds worth Rs 5.62 crore across 33 cases was arrested by Vidhyadhar Nagar police on Tuesday after an extensive search operation in the city.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Karan Sharma said the accused, Shakeel Ahmed, a resident of Shaheed Indira Jyoti Nagar in Kachhi Basti, had opened a bank account in October 2023. The account later appeared in multiple cyber fraud complaints.

On September 13, during checks on the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre portal, officials found that 33 complaints had been registered against the account from several states, including Rajasthan, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.

Investigations revealed that financial transactions amounting to Rs 5.62 crore had passed through the account over the past year. Station House Officer of Vidhyadhar Nagar, Rakesh Khyaliya, described Ahmed as a cunning operator who posed as a businessman and enticed victims with promises of high profits.

Police teams initially failed to catch him during a raid but later tracked him through a door-to-door survey in the slum area. During interrogation, Ahmed confessed that he and his son-in-law had set up a fictitious firm to execute the fraud and had carried out more than 33 cases of cyber cheating.

Police are continuing to interrogate Ahmed and are searching for his accomplices.
