A 75-year-old man from Secunderabad lost over ₹1.28 lakh in a cyber scam after receiving a fake message that appeared to be from Indian Oil.
The message claimed that his reward points were about to expire and provided a link to redeem them, which led him into a cleverly designed trap that resulted in credit card cyber fraud.
The Hyderabad cyber crime police have registered a case.
The fraudulent link directed him to a fake website that offered an Amazon voucher worth ₹10,000 for a small fee of ₹399. Believing the message, the victim went ahead with the process and received a one-time password (OTP) from HSBC Credit Card Services. Since the OTP message did not specify any transaction amount, he assumed it was for the ₹399 payment and entered it.
As soon as he shared the OTP, the victim got a notification from his bank indicating that his credit card had been charged AED 5499, which is approximately ₹1,28,969.33, at a merchant named “Jumbo Co”.
Realizing he had been deceived, he went to the cyber crime police station to report the incident.
After the incident, the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police released a public advisory urging citizens to be cautious. They emphasized that individuals should never click on suspicious links, even if they seem to come from trusted entities like Indian Oil, banks, or online retailers. OTPs should never be shared with anyone, as they provide complete authorization for transactions.
