Kanpur: The cyber crime unit of the Commissionerate police has apprehended four individuals, including two women, who were part of a larger network involved in scamming people with fake overseas job offers. Investigations revealed that the gang comprises a total of 15 members. Authorities identified four bank accounts linked to their illicit operations, which showed transactions amounting to crores of rupees.
DCP (Crime) SM Qasim Abidi stated that this group has been perpetrating cyber fraud since 2015, affecting over 125,000 victims across the country. They obtained contact information from Naukri.com and conducted interviews via video calls. The arrested suspects include Ariba from Bhananapurwa, Chamanganj, Kirti Gupta from D Block, Kidwai Nagar, Anurag Dixit from Bishunpur, Chaubepur, and Hari Om Pandey from Ajnara Genex, Ghaziabad, whose hometown is Dahi Patti, Pratapgarh. After appearing in court, all suspects were placed in judicial custody.
The DCP (Cyber Crime) disclosed that, the group fraudulently collected 26,800 rupees from Vikas, a resident of Amritsar living in Chakeri, under the guise of job placement. The cyber cell’s investigation traced the funds to the identified accounts. The DCP confirmed that efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining members of the gang, and the police intend to apply the Gangster Act against them. The investigation team received a reward of Rs 20,000. The group acquired SIM cards using fraudulent KYC documents to reach out to and deceive young individuals before discarding the cards.
