Cyber Crime Bust: Gujarat Man Caught in ₹20.37 Lakh Cheque Forgery Scam

The Cyber Crime Cell of the CID in Gandhinagar has apprehended a 24-year-old man for embezzling ₹20.37 lakh through fraudulent cheque withdrawals associated with cyber fraud incidents across several states.

The cyber intelligence unit performed an extensive technical analysis that uncovered these illicit activities. Investigations showed that four accounts at the State Bank of India (SBI) in the Gandhinagar district were frequently involved in financial fraud linked to cybercrime. Nine complaints from different states had been filed against these accounts on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP).

Further examination revealed that the suspect was engaged in cheque forgery and withdrawing significant amounts from these SBI accounts. The transactions were traced back to mobile numbers in the Lawarpur and Kudasan regions of Gandhinagar, with the total amount misappropriated reaching ₹20.37 lakh.

Acting on intelligence, the cybercrime team conducted raids and arrested the suspect, Jatin Prajapati, son of Dasarathbhai Prajapati, who resides in Lawarpur village. They recovered a mobile phone, a bank passbook, and cheques linked to the fraudulent activities from him.

A case has been filed under the appropriate sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). During questioning, Jatin admitted to withdrawing the funds and giving most of the money to his accomplice Gaurang Jagdishbhai, also from Lawarpur village, for a commission of ₹14,000.

Jatin was arrested on March 18 and brought before a court, which remanded him in custody until March 19. Ongoing investigations aim to identify additional associates and reveal the full scope of the cyber fraud operation.
